Environmental Education Fellowship

 The Prescott College Center for Cultural and Ecological Studies is seeking a fellow to implement an ongoing environmental education program in the local elementary and middle schools of Kino Bay, Sonora, México. 

 

Position Summary:

 

Prescott College is dedicated to fostering the sustainability of the environment through experiential education.  Our Environmental Education Program (EEP) addresses a critical need for education and capacity building in a community that is faced with important environmental, socioeconomic, and conservation issues. The Program strives to provide youth from the small fishing community of Kino Bay with the knowledge, motivation and skills to work towards a sustainable ecological and economic future for this biologically diverse region.  The program is currently operating in the 4th, 6th and 7th grades.  Our primary objective is to expand students’ knowledge about local ecosystems, natural history, and conservation through classroom activities and hands-on experiences.

 

The environmental education fellow will work with Prescott College Center staff and local school teachers to implement a curriculum that is focused on earth science, ecology, the regional ecosystems of the Sonoran Desert and Gulf of California and their respective conservation issues.

 

Qualifications:

·    Bachelor’s degree, or advanced thesis student in environmental education, environmental studies, ecology, biology or a related field

·    Classroom and field teaching experience, preferably at the elementary and/or middle school level

·    Experience working in rural Mexico

·    Knowledge of desert and marine ecosystems

·    Excellent Spanish oral and written skills

·    Some English required

·    Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point

·    Self-direction, group living skills, creativity, energy and innovation.

·    Ability to maintain a flexible work schedule

 

Primary Responsibilities:

·    Implement weekly one to two hour long classes in 4th, 6th, and 7th grade classrooms

·    Write weekly class reports and annual program reports

·    Participate in selected regional environmental education conferences and workshops

·    Lead outdoor learning activities in a safe manner

 

Duties:

·    Engage in curriculum planning and teaching in accordance with international standards (NAAEE)

·    Generate and distribute outreach materials about the program to different audiences

·    Schedule field activities and vehicle use with the Prescott College Field Coordinator

·    Act as liaison between Prescott College and local schools

·    Act as a liaison with Prescott College in Arizona to inform faculty and students about opportunities for involvement in the EEP

·    Conduct continual program evaluation to ensure we are meeting our goals and serving the interest of the community

 

Award period: October 2008 – June 2009.

 

Benefits:  The fellow will live and work out of the Prescott College’s Kino Bay Center.  Housing, utilities and  health insurance are provided, as well as selected travel expenses.  The position is full time and the stipend is dependent upon experience and funding availability.
